NJB:
Some of my wonderful ancestors:

My ancestors come from all sorts of places, but they are mostly of English, lowland Scottish and American origin. They fought in various wars, and had various professions. Some were millwrights, soldiers, town clerks, Indian fighters (unfortunately), and many of my more distant ancestors were even lords, counts, earls, dukes, kings and emperors (see: My Royal Ancestors. Some were even Christian and Muslim martyrs, saints, Imams and Prophets (see my table of Islamic ancestors below) (also see My Prophetic Ancestors). They followed many religions (Christians of the Protestant separatist/Puritan movements, Methodists, Anglicans, Roman Catholics as well as Muslims and most lately Bahá'ís), My direct male ancestors worked in coal mines, and as iron puddlers. I have not been able to trace my Bridgewater ancestors beyond the early nineteenth century.

The earliest direct male-line Bridgewater that I can trace is one Thomas BRIDGWATER. He was born circa 1823 (but christened 14 Jan 1826) in Stoke St. Milborough, Shropshire, England. He married (14 Dec 1846 in Brockmoor, Staffordshire) Maria LEWIS (christened 20 Sep 1821 in Neen Savage, Shropshire), daughter of Joseph Lewis (b. c. 1791). When I finally obtained a copy of their marriage certificate, I discovered that Thomas was the illegitimate son of Hannah BRIDGWATERS (christened 13 Aug 1806). I have not yet been able to discover who the father was. If anyone has any information which might help me to track him down, please let me know [see my page "Who was the father of Thomas Bridgwater of Stoke St. Milborough?"]. Hannah was the daughter of Edward BRIDGWATERS and Elizabeth EDWARDS. Edward was christened on 18 Mar 1770 in Cold Weston, Shropshire, England. His parents were John BRIDGWATER(S) and Hannah.

Thomas and Maria's son, also Thomas Bridgwater, was born 18 Nov 1861 in Kingswinford, Stafford, England. His wife was Pheobe Hannah Lawton or Laughton. She was born circa 1862, also in Kingswinford. Her father was Sampson Laughton, who was born circa 1826 in Sedgley, Stafford, England. Thomas Bridgewater and Pheobe H. Lawton’s son was also named Thomas, and he was born 1 January 1892 in the Dell, Pennsnett, Staffs, England. He later married Emma Louisa Holt, and they had a son named Freddie. Freddie Bridgewater was born on 27 August 1920 in Pensnett and died on 20 September 1992. He married Laura Hopley, who was born on 20 July 1922 in Audley, Stoke-on-Trent, England and died 24 October 2003 in Exmouth, Devon, England. She was the daughter of Leonard Hopley and Rachel Elizabeth Buckley.

Their child was ********* ************, my father. He was born on *************** in **************. He later married **********************, an American with a mixture of lowland Scottish and English ancestry, tracing back to the sixteen hundreds. It is through her that I can trace most of my ancestors. This is mostly thanks to the genealogical dedication of my maternal grandfather, James Clifford Eaton. ************** also has many royal and noble connections, through both her mother and her father. The earliest traceable ancestors on my father's side (as of 2006) are Randolph Lawton (b.c. 1550) and Helen Fernihough (Thanks to the research of my fifth cousin, twice removed, Anne Lawton).

Our earliest traceable ancestor used to be William Fairbanke (b. 1445). I have now traced many lines going back to King Edward III Plantagenet, my 20th and 21st great grandfather, and thus to the Royal Families of Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Russia, etc. Some of my oldest traceable lines go back to the Merovingians, the High Kings of Ireland and the Welsh Royal Families. I am descended from several of Edward III's sons, including several lines from each of the following: John of Gaunt, Lionel of Antwerp and Edmund of Langley. I am descended from Richard, 3rd Duke of York, father of Edward IV and great-grandfather of Henry VIII. I have so many Plantagenet links that if I were alive during the Wars of the Roses I might have had a good shot at the throne, if I could raise an army of course. Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, only has one link to Edward III through the "legitimised" Beaufort line which had no right to the throne. I have many legitimate links to Edward III, as well as Beaufort lines. I share many of the same ancestors as Elizabeth of York, in marrying whom Henry VII strengthened his claim to the throne.

I am descended from Lady Margaret Plantagenet, 8th Countess of Salisbury (1467/70-1541), who was the governess of the famous Queen Mary I Tudor, otherwise known as "Bloody Mary". However, she fell out of favour with Mary's father, Henry VIII, because she was seen as supportive of his wife, Catherine of Aragorn. Besides this fact, Henry VIII was trying to get rid of rival claimants and Margaret Plantagenet was just too royal to be allowed to live. My ancestor was sent to a cruel execution on the 25th of May 1541 in the Tower of London, where she was killed by an axe only after 11 blows. The first axe blow missed her head and afterwards she fled and was chased by the axeman who hacked her to death. She was beatified in 1886 by Pope Leo XIII and the feast day of "Blessed Margaret Pole" (her husband's surname was Pole) is on the 28th of May. Her son, and the brother of my ancestor, was Reginald Pole, the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury (under Queen Mary I Tudor, whom my ancestor had helped to raise), who was nearly elected Pope. Henry VIII also executed her son, Henry Pole, from whom I am descended. I always thought I might be related to Henry VIII (on account of the red hair), and I am in fact a descendant of his great-grandfather, but I never imagined that Henry VIII had tried to exterminate my ancestors in the most cruel manner.

Through the wife of Edmund of Langley, Princess Isabel of Castile and Leon, the daughter of Pedro the Cruel and Maria Juana de Padilla, I can trace a link going back to Muhammad, the Messenger of God and Seal of the Prophets (pbuH&Hd). Maria de Padilla is descended from a relationship between Alfonso VI of Castile and a Moorish woman from the line of the Chamberlains of Seville, which traces back through a female line to Hassan, the 2nd of the Holy Imáms, and son of 'Alí, Commander of the Faithful, the first Imám and appointed successor of Muhammad (pbuH&Hd). Although he was elected as the 4th Caliph of Islám, Muhammad (pbuH&Hd) is said to have verbally appointed 'Alí, His cousin and son-in-law, as His hereditary successor. 'Ali was married to Fatimih, the daughter of the Prophet, but was also descended through the male line from Muhammad's grandfather. I am descended through at least three lines from Maria de Padilla, and thus, have at least three lines of descent from the Prophet Muhammad (pbuH&Hd), Who is my 45th Great-Grandfather. This is quite interesting since I'm going to be studying Arabic and Persian, and, as a Baha'i, have always been a firm believer in Muhammad (pbuH&Hd), the Holy Qur'an and the Holy Imáms (the 12 hereditary successors of the Prophet). For more information on the Baha'i Faith, see "What is the Baha'i Faith?" Also, for information on the holy ancestry of Bahá'u'lláh, Founder of the Baha'i Faith, see: Ancestry of Bahá'u'lláh

Another interesting ancestor (who also suffered as a similar fate to the Blessed Margaret Pole) was Edmund Dudley, Esquire. He was originally a barrister, as well under-sheriff of London from 1496-7 to 1502-3. He afterwards sold his office, went to court, and came into the favour of the then king Henry VII Tudor, such that, in January 1504, he was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons. Later on, he also received appointment as King's President of the Council and joint Commissioner, with Sir Richard Empson, for the forfeitures under penal statutes. After the death of Henry VII, he, along with Empson, was arrested and confined to the Tower of London for sixteen months, before being executed on the 17th of August 1510. During this time, he wrote the "Tree of Common Wealth", a treatise in support of absolute monarchy, which was written in order to convince Henry VIII to show mercy upon him. Unfortunately, the treatise probably never reached the court of the king, and, in any case, Henry VIII was not known for his boundless mercy. I have transcribed the treatise, which you can read HERE. One of his sons became John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. John Dudley, in his turn, became the father of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, who was the main favourite of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I. I am descended from the Duke of Northumberland's half-sister, Elizabeth, whose mother was Anne Windsor (the Duke's mother being Elizabeth Grey).

As for American ancestors, I have discovered a link to the Elder, William Brewster, a leading founder of the Separatist Church and a Mayflower passenger along with his wife. So, it turns out that I even had ancestors present at the "first Thanksgiving". My "religious" ancestry thus appears to be quite mixed, as I am descended from strong Catholics, like Margaret Plantagenet, Muslims as well as non-conformist or separatist and Puritan Protestants as well as conformist Anglicans on my father's side. My parents are both Bahá'ís so I have a very interesting "religious ancestry".

John Humphreys (1596-1661), General (see source [saved at the Internet Archive]), my 11th great grandfather, was an immigrant to New England. His wife was Susan Clinton, Lady Fynes. After falling out with Governor Winthrop he returned to England on 26 Oct 1641. He was offered governship of a new colony named Providence in the West Indies but instead got caught up in the English Civil War. He was the one who carried the sword during the trial of King Charles I Stuart. He never returned to New England. I suppose that means he was a Cromwellian. I am more sympathetic to the martyred Charles.

Another recent Protestant link I've discovered is Captain John Thomas, who according to Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs, Vol. II, pp. 755-757, was the "son of Andrew Thomas, of Carmaethan, Wales, a descendant of Sir Rys ap Thomas, created Knight of the Garter in 1507, and one of the four knights who accompanied the king to the Field of the Cloth of Gold and a nephew of Captain John Thomas, who was a valiant and honorable captain in the Royal Navy in 1656. Captain John Thomas (later the emigrant) in 1688 was selected as the messenger to carry to Holland, from the Lords and Bishops of England, their invitation to William of Orange to come over and expel James II from the English throne. This was a most hazardous undertaking and required the greatest secrecy and caution. Sewing the letters underneath the lining of his coat, he took passage, but before reaching his destination his vessel was compelled to heave-to, and submit to being searched by an English man-of-war. He escaped detection and safely delivered his letters and messages to William. When William invaded England, Captain John Thomas was commander of the vessel that conveyed the Prince and Princess of Orange to the English shore. For this and other valuable services he was given by the King a paper grant of thirty thousand pounds and four oil paintings of the King and Queen, Prince George and Princess, afterward Queen Anne... Captain John was a mariner and commanded vessels that sailed the world over, it being his boast that there were few seaports in the whole world he had not entered with his ship. For some reason unexplained he was compelled to leave England prior to 1694. He is first heard from in New England in 1694, and the first mention is in the diary of Judge Samuel Lewell, who names him in that year. He settled in Braintree, where he married." According to some sources, Sir Rhys (Rys / Rees) ap Thomas was the one who actually killed Richard III, which is pretty weird since I'm descended from George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence who was the brother of Richard. This means that one possible ancestor (Sir Rhys) killed the brother of my other ancestor, the Duke of Clarence!

I have discovered that I am a 10th cousin, once removed of President George W. Bush (I am not involved in partisan politics, this is just of genealogical interest), and 10th cousin twice removed of former President George H.W. Bush. Our common ancestor is William Sabin(baptised 1609), one of the early settlers of New England. I have known for quite some time that I have Lincoln ancestors, but have not, until now, managed to trace my connection with the famous Lincoln. Through a couple of websites (here and here) I am a fifth cousin, five times removed from President Abraham Lincoln through our common ancestors Samuel Lincoln and Martha Lyford, a 7th cousin, 5 times removed through our common ancestors Edward Gilman and Mary Hawes and an 8th cousin four and five times removed through our common ancestors Robert Lincoln and Margaret Alberye.

I was born on 11 June 1985 in Worcester, Worcestershire, England, U.K. The first 4 years of my life were spent in England, but we moved to America. I was resident in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York, U.S.A. for ten years, after which we moved temporarily to England. After spending almost two years there, we moved to the Hellenic Republic (Greece), where we lived for roughly two years. My parents and I then lived in Wales from 2003-2004. I went to Warsaw, Poland, where I did my year of service to the Bahá’í Faith. My main work there was among the Esperantists. Esperanto is an international auxiliary language initiated by Ludwik Lazarus Zamenhof in 1886, intended to be an intrument of world peace and international understanding. He designed it to be an easy-to-learn, regular, yet beautiful language capable of representing any human thought and expression. It is neutral, belonging to no person, nation, culture, creed or religion. Esperantists have developed a lively international community, culture and literature based upon the principle of the brotherhood of humankind. (If you want to learn more about Esperanto, you can see Esperanto.net, the official website of the Universal Esperanto Association, the Esperanto League for North America, the Esperanto Association of Britain or a number of other sites in English.) I was also involved in the Bahá’í Institute process in Poland, supporting several Ruhi Book study circles. Since September 2005 I've been studying Middle Eastern Languages (Modern Standard Arabic and Modern Persian) at the University of Manchester, in England. In my third year I plan to go to Egypt and Iran to study. The whole course lasts four years.

Why do we travel so much? Well, my mother is American so we wanted to move over there. Eventually, we wanted to return to the UK and then go to another country. We wanted to go to Greece to learn about another culture and to help out the Bahá’í community in Patras, Greece. My parents and I are members of the Bahá’í Faith. Bahá'u'lláh said: "The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens" and "This span of earth is but one homeland and one habitation.". So Greece, England, Wales, America, they are all part of our homeland. Wherever I live is my native country. So you could say that I've never left home. And wherever I go there are friends, fellow Bahá’ís, who are all part of one global community. (If you want to learn more about the Bahá’í Faith see my website, Nick's Bahá’í FAQ or the official Bahá’í website, www.bahai.org)

I would be interested to hear if anyone can provide additional information about my father’s ancestry. I would be interested to know anything I can about the Bridgewaters. If anyone knows of Bridgewaters in the regions which I have specified prior to the 19th century, or directly connecting to one of my ancestors, please contact me. It would be interesting hear how far other Bridgewaters have traced their male lines. I would also be interested in further information regarding my Lawton (Laughton), Brown, Buckely, Holt, Hopley and Tunley ancestors.
